Years ago, I came across a remarkable truth about prophecy being fulfilled in Jesus.
Genesis 28:12-14 (KJV)
12 And he [Jacob] dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
13 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
So, who is this Seed, to whom the promises were made?
Galatians 3:16 (KJV)
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
The dream itself was an image of the promises the Lord made him in this dream. It was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
John 1:40-51 (KJV)
49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
It’s pretty obvious to anyone who reads it that Jacob’s Ladder is Jesus Christ. That part about “the angels of God ascending and descending” is a dead give-away. One ladder; one seed. The same language is used in chapter 3:
John 3:13 King James Version (KJV)
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
That’s ascending and descending. Into and out of the Presence of God. (See also John 10:9). We can go boldly before the Throne of Grace (Heb 4:16)! That ladder is still in place because He is in His church! It sits upon the earth, and there is no way to the Father except through Jesus Christ! You cannot have entrance through that ladder all by yourself. This business about “…me and Jesus got our own thing going, and we don’t need nobody [else]” doesn’t work! But He said,
Matthew 18:20 (KJV)
20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
I am committed now as I have ever been to preach the gospel:
John 14:6 (KJV)
6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
