Contemporary Songs That Have A Folk/Country Style
Written by Sean on August 4, 2018
What makes Christian Music “Christian”? Well its a song that has a message about Christ, or a Christ-centered message. Today, Christian songs have come from just hymns to now reaching in just about all formats of music. Styles of music don’t make a song secular, because music is music. The words to the song make it Christian. Contemporary is the most popular form of Christian music, followed by Praise & Worship (a form of contemporary), Rock, and Southern Gospel. But many contemporary artists like to see if they can introduce a little folk or country swing in their music, and we love it. I’ve posted some of my favorite contemporary artists who arn’t afraid to reach out into the Country/Folk world.
I AM THEY, a pop-acoustic worship group, stands as a modern-day altar to the Lord. The members themselves are the testimonial stones – each with their own stories of trial and triumph. Matthew Hein, although having grown up involved in ministry and surrounded by the truth of the gospel, had found himself trapped in an addiction to pornography. From the age of thirteen this was something he had hid successfully, but as a leader in his church and newly engaged to his fiancé Tori, he knew it was time to reveal this inner battle. He confessed this sin to his fiancé, his pastor, and God himself, expecting to lose everything – but the rejection never came. Instead of losing all he had, Matt felt the freedom he had wanted for so long, like he could breathe again. This heavy rock he had carried is now a part of an altar. (Source from Website)

They began playing in Nashville and signed to INO Records, who released the band’s debut album, 33Miles, in 2007. The album peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Top Heatseeker’s albums chart and No. 16 on its Top Christian Albums chart. In 2008, their next album, One Life, proved to be the record that broke them big, landing at No. 4 on Billboard’s Top Christian Albums chart and sneaking into the lower reaches of the Top 200. In 2009, they released their Christmas album, Believe. Their 2007 song, “There is a God”, was played as the wake-up call music for the Space Shuttle astronauts on their STS-128 mission on September 3, 2009. Pianist Collin Stoddard left the group in 2009 to become a pastor. In 2010, Barton and Lockwood continued on and released Today. (Source from Wikipedia)

Danny Gokey. That chain of experiences stretches back to Gokey’s upbringing in Milwaukee. He was born to sing, though it took a while for him to realize that. “Singing was what my family did but we really couldn’t tell whether our voices were any good,” he remembers, smiling. “I remember that when we had snow days and the schools were closed, my father would order pizza, put on his Motown albums and we’d all dance and sing to the songs he and my mom dated to. That’s where I got my soulful roots, from listening to the Chi-Lites, to the Temptations, to Earth, Wind and Fire.” (Source from Website)
