Guidance

“True guidance is like a small torch in a dark forest. It does not show everything at once but gives enough light for the next step to be safe.” - Anonymous

I was watching this cooking show where professional chefs were giving directions to a home cook. The chef stood above the home cook, able to help but only by giving directions.

As I watched, I noticed how frustrated the chefs seemed. They would give instructions, and even if the home cook listened, nothing was done exactly the way the professional chef would have done it.

This made me think about God directing us and how blessed we are to have a patient, gentle, and loving God who gives us direction as much and as many times as we need it.

James 3:17 says, "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere."

As a parent, I do my best to guide my kids, and I have come to learn that they will still do things their own way regardless of how much direction I give. As they have gotten older, I’ve learned that they need to figure things out on their own. I give some direction and advice, but in the end, they have to walk their own path.

That’s the way life is. God would love for us to follow all the guidance He gives us, but at the same time, He knows that we have to choose on our own what we are going to do.

Proverbs 5:21 says, "For the Lord sees clearly what a man does, examining every path he takes."

God wants us to turn to Him for all things.

We all make decisions, and sometimes we don’t know which direction to go or what choice to make. From new job decisions to having to quickly choose a meal off a huge menu, we sometimes wish someone would just tell us what to do.

We can go to God with all our questions. I’m relieved by that because there are times I feel stuck and need to ask questions to get some kind of forward momentum going.

The Bible tells us that God has a plan for us, and we just need to turn to Him to get the answers we seek. Ephesians 2:10 says, "For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago."

I’m thankful that God sees all and has a plan for me. Now, I just need to trust and obey.
