Heart and Mind

We’re going to talk about two important parts of us—our heart and our mind. And let’s be honest, sometimes they don’t exactly agree.
Your heart says, "Go for it!" and your mind says, "Have you lost your mind?!"
It’s a little like being on a road trip where one wants to take the scenic route and the other wants to stick to the GPS.
We’re gonna have some fun unpacking how to get our heart and mind working together, especially with God leading the way.
Our Scripture for today is Philippians 4:7 (NLT) —"Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
Your heart wants adventure, your mind wants a checklist. Sound familiar? Let’s talk about the tug-of-war between the two—and how God’s peace can help us balance both.
Ever had buyer’s remorse? Your heart said, "That shiny thing is PERFECT!" and your mind kicked in later asking, "Why did we do that?"
I bought some shoes once that were on sale. I thought they fit for the most part, so I told myself I’d get used to them... Well, I tried. They fit, but the insole was just so uncomfortable. I didn’t wear them often, but I kept them for a while. I have definitely questioned my cheapness from that point on!
Our hearts are emotional; our minds are logical. God gave us both for a reason—but He also gave us His peace to help guard them.
Think about a time when your heart and mind weren’t on the same page. Funny now, right?
God has given us both a heart and a mind to bring balance and understanding.
Sometimes faith feels like a heart thing, but it needs our minds too—like when God asks us to trust Him even when it doesn’t ‘make sense.’ Our faith isn’t mindless; it’s thoughtful trust.
Would you ever decide with only your heart? I mean, sure, there’s that saying, "Follow your heart," but I’m pretty sure there are some thoughts put into it, not just blindly following it.
Our heart and mind work together—and it’s the same with our faith. We not only need to believe things with our hearts but also with our minds.
How can you use your heart’s passion and your mind’s wisdom together to follow God today?
Heart vs. Mind shows up everywhere—like grocery shopping hungry (bad idea), online shopping late at night (also bad), or deciding whether to send that text (dangerous!).
Laughing at ourselves a little helps us see how important it is to pause and pray before reacting. Thank goodness we can make choices—otherwise, we might make some big mistakes.
God promises peace that guards BOTH our hearts and our minds. That’s like having a bodyguard on each side! Wherever you feel torn today, invite His peace in. It’s amazing what clarity comes when He’s leading.
What’s one area where you need a little more 'mind' today?
Some of the greatest moments in life happen when we let our hearts lead—with a little prayer first! Think about love stories, big dreams, and leaps of faith. Sometimes a little "heart over mind" makes life beautiful.
This is so true. I can talk myself out of anything, but that doesn’t mean that I should. Sometimes we just have to trust that our hearts are in the right place and that the decision we’re about to make is gonna be okay.
We talked about following your heart, but of course there are times when your mind saves the day—like sticking to a budget, thinking through a tough decision, or simply choosing to stay silent when your heart really wants to say something. God gives wisdom, and it’s priceless!
I need all of these things in my thought process. I could get myself into some trouble if I didn’t think things through, so I’m very blessed that God saw fit for us to use both our hearts and minds.
Our Scripture for today is a great reminder: Philippians 4:7 (NLT) —"Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
What’s a time your heart wanted one thing, but your mind (or maybe God's nudge) helped you make a better choice?
Good question, right? How about when we think we want something but realize we don’t need it, so we put it back? I used to walk around the store putting things in my basket just to pretty much put it all back before checkout.
I realized that just because I wanted it didn’t mean I needed it. So I took the time to evaluate what my heart wanted versus what my mind said I actually needed.
Before we rush into the day, let’s do a quick peace check.
Are you feeling pulled in a hundred directions? Stop and ask God to guard your heart and mind today. Even 30 seconds can change your whole day.
How do we stay centered daily—not just once in a while—so our heart and mind don’t run wild without each other?
Jesus showed emotion—He cried, He celebrated—but He also stayed centered on His mission. He trusted God fully. If Jesus needed both heart and mind in balance, so do we!
Let’s hold on to our Scripture for today: Philippians 4:7 (NLT) —"Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."
Simple things like starting your day with a quick prayer, reading a verse, or just taking a deep breath before reacting can help line up your heart and mind.
This has helped me, and I’m all about small wins every day.
Quick confession: I once followed my heart into buying a plant I absolutely could not take care of. I don’t have a green thumb, so you can imagine how many plants haven’t survived.
Moral of the story—passion is great, but planning is necessary!
Heart and mind may not always agree, but with God in the center, they can work together beautifully.
Life can be confusing, and when we feel that tug between our heart and mind, we absolutely need to turn to God. Let’s invite His peace into our decisions today and every day.
He is not a God of confusion but of clarity. So seek the Lord for that—and don’t try to struggle-bus yourself through it.
Remember: You were created with a heart to feel and a mind to think—and God wants to guide both. When we invite Him into the center, we get His peace guarding us like a big warm hug for our soul.
