Yesterday we talked about the faith Mary had to have when the angel Gabriel came and told her that she would carry a son and not just any son the Son of the Most High. She did not fully understand it, but she said OK, if it is from the Lord, I will go with it.
Today I would like to talk about Joseph… He was engaged to Mary and then got this news about her being pregnant, but see was not unfaithfil this was a supernatural pregnancy so all was ok, and he could still marry her, if he chose to.
That is a lot to contemplate. This is a big decision and back then taking a women who was pregnant out of wedlock was a big deal....she would have been demmed unclean in the Jewish culture. So Joseph had alot to think about.
Matthew 1: 18-21 and verse 24
This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.
As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.
I am sure when Joseph was planning on marrying Mary the last thing, he thought of was her getting pregnant with the Son of God and that he would then help raise Jesus…that is not something anyone could plan for at all.
But God knew the hearts of Mary and Joseph and that is how this whole story began.
When Joseph found out about Mary, he was not sure he wanted to continue to stay with her, but the angel Gabriel came and reassured him, that all was good, and that God was in the midst of all of this. Joseph being a faithful man knew that if God was in it then he should be faithful not only to God but to Mary and he stayed and married her and did his duty of taking care of and protecting Mary.
Joseph’s faith is one to look at here because no matter the situations we go through when we go to God, and ask for him to help us to see from His perspective, we can better grasp what is happening in what God is doing.
I am sure even though it does not say much about Joseph in the scriptures, that he was questioning his ability to help raise the Son of God, but God knew what He was doing and that is what we need to see here.
Joseph was seeing his own perspective and what the law had taught until Gabriel came and told Him what God had done and that he, Joseph, had a role to play in this as well.
Once he knew better what Gods plan was, he was then able to deicded to follow the Lord in this and not his own knowledge and understanding. God's understanding is far greater than ours.
Regardless of understanding, if we are moving in faith in what the Lord has said and that He will guide and provide what we need to succeed.
God has planned everything according to His will for you to walk in it. In the same way, He did not choose Mary and Joseph by accident to be the earthly parents of His son. He has chosen to use you even if His plans are not what you expected.
Ephesians 2:10
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
