Tune Your Ear

“What does it look like to treasure God's Word? How do we train our ears? It takes concentration, commitment, and time. Study the Scripture daily. Seek God in prayer. And listen patiently for the prompting of the Holy Spirit. You'll find the purity and joy of a centered life—whether you are making a meal, running the budget numbers, or just making copies.”

Let’s think about how we hear God. So, we can be prepared for anything He has for us from day to day.

I've been involved with music my entire life, and my ears have been finely tuned to pick up harmonies and melodies. Growing up, music was always playing in my household, and my mom's side of the family is very musical, so it's something that's always been a part of my life.

When it comes to matters of faith, learning to hear from God is essential, akin to the practice required when learning anything related to music.

Referring to John 12:29, "when the crowd heard the voice, some mistook it for thunder, while others believed an angel had spoken to him."

It's crucial to engage with scripture, prayer, and spend time listening for God's voice. By preparing our hearts to hear from God, we become more receptive and attuned to His guidance. As we become more accustomed to discerning God's voice, we will find it easier to learn from Him and recognize His communication with us without doubt.

I struggle with learning a new language. I've always wished it would come easily to me, but unfortunately, it doesn't. Despite taking numerous classes, I can only manage to express very basic things.

Similarly, you might expect that tuning in to hear God would be effortless. However, that hasn't been the case for me. It's akin to learning a new language. Each of us has unique ways in which God communicates with us, so it can take time to discern how He speaks to you and to truly listen to Him. We must train our ears to perceive His voice.

Proverbs 2:1-2 advises, "My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding."

Developing a relationship with God requires us to invest time in learning His voice. As we grow in closeness with Him, we become more adept at recognizing His communication.

When we can understand someone clearly, paying attention is effortless. Communication flows smoothly, with occasional questions but overall comprehension. We're able to engage in meaningful conversation back and forth.

God desires that level of communication with us. Therefore, when we approach Him with questions and patiently await His answers, we're learning to tune our ears to His voice.

Proverbs 4:20-22 instructs, "My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body."

Whether we're reading the Bible or receiving guidance from God, it's crucial to hold onto His words tightly. We should cherish His words and allow them to guide us.

Let's be listening for God every moment of every day.
